The idea of a Cricket World Cup was proposed by Tony Grieg, the then Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Grieg proposed the inclusion of the World Cup in 1981, but it was the 1978-79 test series match between Australia and the West Indies that made the tournament a reality.
